27 Swapping the Beam
suddenly echoed from inside the room.Yun Qianyue immediately put down the designs and turned around to look at him. He was still half-asleep, his eyes were closed with a slight smile on his lips and t...Chapter 27: Swapping the Pillar
Yu Qianyue was stunned and couldn't believe what she heard as she looked at Rong Jing. Was her grandfather's wager about their wedding night
"If you hadn't played a game of chess on behalf of Grandpa Cloud, I would have won for sure!" Rong Jing sighed lightly while looking at Yu Qianyue.
The sky suddenly seemed very gloomy to Yu Qianyue. She turned to look at the Old Prince and saw him nodding at her. She immediately stood up with anger in her eyes and glared at Rong Jing, "Why didn't you say so earlier If you had said that earlier, I would have never replaced him!"
"Damn brat!" The old prince shouted out of frustration, "Are you ashamed or not! Do you really wish to be with him on your wedding night"
Yu Qianyue's face turned red as she angrily said, "Of course I do!"
The old prince glared at Yu Qianyue and his beard twitched as he muttered, "You are so pitiful."
Yu Qianyue snorted without looking up, her face still red. She felt that she was indeed pitiful. But how did she know about their bet She thought they were simply playing a normal game of chess.
Rong Jing reached out his arm and pulled Yu Qianyue into his embrace. He wrapped his arms around her slim waist, and as he looked at her embarrassed face, he suddenly lowered his head to chuckle softly. His laughter was full of joy and satisfaction.
"What are you laughing about" Yu Qianyue asked with a flushed face.
"Yu Qianyue, it turns out that you were expecting me!" Rong Jing laughed heartily, his voice sounding like sweet music with hints of warmth and intoxication.
Yu Qianyue was already embarrassed enough, but now she felt even more humiliated. She pushed him hard and walked away from him angrily, leaving a parting shot behind her back: "Rong Jing, there's no way I'll let you have your wedding night!"
Rong Jing stopped laughing.
Yu Qianyue thought to herself that only an old man could be shameless like this, referring to the Old Prince, and a young man who is shameless would refer to Rong Jing. It was simply outrageous for them to bet on her wedding night!
"Damn brat! You just left like that" The old prince watched as Yu Qianyue walked away quickly, and he harrumphed: "You still know what shyness is How rare!"
"It's best if you keep quiet! Otherwise I'll pull out all your beard hairs! Don't think I won't do it!" Yu Qianyue turned around to glare at the old prince and left him with a fierce warning. Seeing Rong Jing getting up to follow her, she growled: "You'd better not show your face in front of me for three days or else you'll never have your wedding night."
The old prince immediately stopped talking.
Rong Jing also halted his steps.
Yu Qianyue saw that her words had stunned both men and turned to leave the Old Prince’s courtyard. Only when she walked far enough did she hear the old prince mumble, "Damn brat!" Rong Jing murmured softly: "Three days I can endure it." She suddenly found this amusing and began walking towards Moonlight Pavilion with a light step.
Halfway through her walk, she saw Yun Li and Princess Seventh coming out. They were walking side by side under the blue trees and red flowers, their figures slowly strolling on the corridor of pavilions and terraces. Neither was speaking, but there was an air of harmony and beauty between them. She stopped to watch them for a moment, feeling relieved if they could be so amicable with each other. Her two brothers had left her, and Yun Li was now like her brother who would shoulder the responsibility of Cloud Manor. Naturally, she hoped he would find happiness.
"Sister!" Yun Li spotted Yu Qianyue first and called out to her.
The Seventh Princess also raised her head and saw Yun Qianyue standing in front, her face slightly blushing but she didn’t say anything.
Yun Qianyue noticed that Yun Li’s swollen face had subsided somewhat and did not look as scary as it was when she returned last night. She smiled lightly, "Brother must take his medicine on time every day! His looks will be restored in no time!"
"Alright," Yun Li nodded.
The Seventh Princess looked at Yun Li’s face in surprise and then at Yun Qianyue. Seemingly puzzled, she asked, "Can such a deep wound still recover his looks"
"Of course! I have a bottle of Collagen Dew for him!" Yun Qianyue blinked her eyes and smiled at the Seventh Princess, "The other princesses have no taste, but you do. How can I not treat you well You will be my sister-in-law one day. Don’t you want to see Brother looking good every day"
The Seventh Princess blushed and lowered her head.
Yun Li’s face also turned red as he said to Yun Qianyue, "I’ll send the Seventh Princess out of the manor."
Yun Qianyue smiled and nodded. The two stepped towards the entrance while she paused for a moment before heading back to her residence, Shallow Moon Pavilion. Shortly after returning to Shallow Moon Pavilion, Jade Bracelet and Green Twig arrived with account books.
Seeing Jade Bracelet smiling, Yun Qianyue asked, "Where’s Rong Jing Is he still at Grandpa’s courtyard"
Jade Bracelet shook her head and replied with a smile, "Young Master Jing just returned to the manor!"
"Did he say anything" Yun Qianyue asked again.
"Before leaving, Young Master Jing said that he would be in seclusion after returning," Jade Bracelet smiled as she replied.
Yun Qianyue pursed her lips. She thought to herself that it was good that he knew his mistake! Men shouldn’t get too comfortable with her! They always seemed to think she was an easy target. Suddenly, she found her childishness amusing and rubbed her forehead as she muttered, "I’m getting younger the older I get!"
"Miss Yun Qianyue hasn’t even come of age yet! She’s still young," Green Twig said with a smile.
Yun Qianyue smiled gently and looked at the two. They immediately explained their purpose, which was to present her with account books regarding income from business ventures and farmland under Yun王府名下的產業收益和府中開銷等賬本;二是關於雲離世子過繼禮的一切籌備及各府邸送禮名單及籌備事宜,供雲淺月過目。
The old emperor sent Ye Tianyi to attend the ceremony, and among the princes were also Ye Tianqing and Ye Tiand煜 (assuming "Tiand煜" is a typo for "Tiandi", correcting it for clarity). Night Qingran arrived very early in the morning as well. Rong Feng came later. The Duke of De and the Duke of Xiao, along with Chancellor Qin from the previous generation of court officials, also arrived successively.
The Empress did not attend due to her pregnancy but had someone bring congratulatory gifts instead.
Outside the Yunwang Mansion, according to Cloud Qianyue's and Jade Bracelet’s (Yu Zhuo) and Green Twig's (Lvzhi) arrangements, a continuous banquet was set up. The entire capital city was bustling with activity.
A grand hall had been erected in the main hall for the ceremony, and the maidservants and servants were well-organized. Despite the Yunwang Mansion being busy, there wasn’t any chaos to be seen. Every guest that entered the estate was welcomed by a maid or servant, indicating that Cloud Qianyue managed her household efficiently. Although everyone had already realized that she was extraordinary after experiencing many events with her, seeing how well-organized everything in the mansion was now left guests marveling at her efficiency and clear-headedness.
The adoption ceremony was set for 9 AM, which was considered an auspicious hour on this day. Even before then, Yunwang Mansion's main hall was already full of guests.
Old Grand Duke Yun sat in the foremost position in the main hall, with Grand Duke Yun and Cloud Qianyue seated beside him. All three were dressed formally. After resting for three days, Cloud Qianyue looked refreshed. Unlike her usual lazy posture on a soft couch, she was sitting straight today and frequently glancing at the door. When the ceremonial officer announced that "the auspicious hour has arrived!", not seeing Rong Jing come, she frowned, wondering what he had been up to these days
"Miss, Prince Jingshi sent over his gift earlier! He said he would arrive later," Ling Lian whispered to Cloud Qianyue.
Cloud Qianyue asked without hesitation, "Did the messenger say what he was doing"
Ling Lian shook her head. "He didn’t mention it. But clearly, Prince Jingshi seems to have something important today and can't be free."
Cloud Qianyue nodded, not saying anything further.
Following the ceremonial officer's announcement, Ye Tianyi read out the imperial edict bestowing honors on Yun Li on behalf of the old emperor. After the imperial decree was read, Yun Li proceeded to perform the adoption ritual with the guidance of the ceremonial officer. Ancient people attached great importance and solemnity to this kind of ceremony. Having recuperated for several days and with Cloud Qianyue’s cream essence, the scars on Yun Li's face had faded, leaving only pink marks that didn't detract from his beauty. Wearing a magnificent set of clothes, he looked elegantly handsome. His manner was courteous, and his steps steady, earning him praise from many who hadn’t seen him before.
After burning the incense and placing the crown, the ceremony concluded! Henceforth, Yun Li would respectfully refer to Old Grand Duke Yun as grandfather, call Grand Duke Yun father, and address Cloud Qianyue as his younger sister. He officially transitioned from a talented branch member of Yunwang Mansion to its main lineage's direct descendant. His future descendants would also be part of this main line.
After the ceremony concluded, one after another came forward to congratulate them.
Around rounds of congratulations later, Old Grand Duke Yun announced the opening of Yunwang Mansion’s ancestral hall and led Yun Li into it to pay homage to their ancestors. Due to the Empress Zhenjing's relationship with Yunwang Mansion, from her onwards, portraits of every generation’s legitimate daughters were enshrined here. Male heirs of Yunwang Mansion had the opportunity each year during annual sacrifices to enter the mansion’s ancestral hall to pay respects to their forebears. But a female heir only got three opportunities in her lifetime: birth, coming-of-age, and marriage.
Therefore, Cloud Qianyue had only visited once before—when she was born.
Aware of Yunwang Mansion's rules, Cloud Qianyue sat quietly. However, unexpectedly, Old Grand Duke Yun instructed her to follow him into the ancestral hall while leaving Grand Duke Yun behind to greet guests and arrange for a grand banquet.
As she followed Old Grand Duke Yun and Yun Li towards the ancestral hall, she recalled her first visit there—a memory that was fifteen years old.
The Yunwang Mansion’s ancestral hall was located at the far end of an independent courtyard within the estate. Upon arriving at the entrance to the ancestral hall, someone opened the door for them as Old Grand Duke Yun entered with Yun Li and Cloud Qianyue, after which the door closed again.
The courtyard seemed just like in her memory—neither dark nor damp, clean along the way. She remembered clearly that fifteen years ago, when she was a newborn baby, her mother had brought her here; though distant, she could still recall her mother’s solemn demeanor then. Her mother must have held Yunwang Mansion in high regard!
Upon reaching the inner courtyard at the rear, the caretakers of the ancestral hall opened the door for them.
Old Grand Duke Yun led the way inside first, while Yun Li seemed somewhat nervous and glanced at Cloud Qianyue. She gave him an assuring look, which steadied his nerves, allowing him to follow in after her. Finally, Cloud Qianyue stepped over the threshold.
The first thing that catches the eye is a row of portraits and memorial tablets. They are the ancestors of Cloud Prince's Manor and some of his eldest daughters who married into the royal family.
An elderly caretaker takes out the genealogy and loudly recites the names recorded in it for the Cloud Prince’s Manor.
Cloud Li has already bowed to each one. As for Yun Qianyue, she doesn’t have to bow along with him. Instead, she stands there quietly listening. In the quiet ancestral hall, one by one, individual names, dates of birth and death, as well as life stories are heard.
From when the Sky聖Dynasty was established until now, Cloud Prince's Manor has gone through six generations already.
When the caretaker reads out the name of the fifth generation’s heir, he hesitates for a moment and glances at Old Cloud King. Old Cloud King doesn’t say anything, but the caretaker says out a name “Cloud Shaoyuan”. When Yun Qianyue hears this name, she is surprised. She knows that it isn't what His Majesty calls himself. So she looks at Old Cloud King, who in turn doesn’t look back at her. The caretaker continues to read out names and she hears His Majesty's actual name. Indeed, the two aren’t the same person. She suppresses her doubts and says nothing.
Half an hour later, the caretaker finishes reciting the names, and Cloud Li has also finished bowing. He is a scholarly type after all; there are now faint beads of sweat on his forehead.
Old Cloud King waves his hand to dismiss the caretaker and then steps out.
"Grandpa!" Yun Qianyue reaches out and grabs Old Cloud King’s sleeve, looking at him. "Who is this person called 'Cloud Shaoyuan'"
Cloud Li seems a bit puzzled as well, watching Old Cloud King closely.
Old Cloud King glances at Yun Qianyue with an unhappy look on his face and says angrily, "An unworthy descendant!"
Yun Qianyue blinks her eyes. "Unworthy descendants should have a story I want to hear it!"
"Why would you want to listen to him He is just an unworthy descendant! There's no such person in the Cloud Prince’s Manor." Old Cloud King seems to be simmering with anger, and he pushes Yun Qianyue away as he starts walking out.
Yun Qianyue tugs at Old Cloud King’s sleeve and doesn't let go. Old Cloud King glares at her, but she looks back stubbornly. After a moment, Old Cloud King sighs with a somewhat desolate expression. "He is your birth father!"
Cloud Li seems surprised as well, but he remains silent.
Yun Qianyue blinks her eyes again. As expected, there’s no surprise in this revelation. In the genealogy of Cloud Prince’s Manor, only a single name is recorded for him. She thinks that she won’t let go of today's opportunity and can sense that this person holds an extremely important place in Old Cloud King’s heart; otherwise, he wouldn't have allowed him to remain on the Cloud family tree. Yun Qianyue looks at Old Cloud King and says, "I want to know more about him."
"What is there to say He's just an unworthy descendant!" Old Cloud King growls.
Yun Qianyue doesn’t speak anymore; she only looks at Old Cloud King and grips his arm tightly, refusing to let go.
"Smelly brat, let go of me! I'll tell you." Old Cloud King uses the other hand that isn't held by Yun Qianyue to slap her head. The force is quite strong.
Yun Qianyue immediately lets go but doesn’t glare at Old Cloud King as she usually does when he hits her on the head.
Old Cloud King turns around and looks at the portraits of his ancestors, saying with a desolate tone, "Back then, your grandmother gave birth to twins."
Yun Qianyue blinks. So that means it was either the Prime Minister of Liang or His Majesty! She doesn’t speak; instead, she waits for him to continue.
"That year was when the previous emperor passed away, and the current Emperor ascended to the throne. An esteemed celestial master from the Board of Astronomers observed the night sky and said that the Purple Forbidden Star and Dragon Tungsten Star were descending together, indicating that twin brothers would be born in this capital city. The birth of twins is a heavenly omen, signifying that the current era's prosperity has come to an end. To prevent chaos and ensure a peaceful reign for another century, it was necessary to eliminate the twin brothers." said the Old Marquis Yun.
Yun Shan Yue frowned. "And then"
"That year, your grandmother had a difficult childbirth; if she hadn't undergone a cesarean section, both her and the child's lives would have been at risk. Reluctantly, we performed an emergency surgery on her, only to find that she was carrying twin boys," said the Old Marquis Yun, his face filled with sorrow as he remembered the past.
Yun Shan Yue thought about how advanced ancient medical techniques were, but they still weren't sophisticated enough. If it had happened in modern times, all three lives would definitely have been saved.
"Before she died, your grandmother left a last wish: these two children are the price of her life and cannot be given away; otherwise, she wouldn't rest in peace. Furthermore, this might bring about the destruction of the Yun王府. After all, with the birth of twin brothers, even if they were handed over, they would still be under suspicion from the royal family. Your grandmother had already lost her life for this reason, so I naturally wouldn't give these two children away. They are my flesh and blood!" The Old Marquis Yun’s eyes reddened as he choked on his last sentence.
Yun Shan Yue reached out to hold his hand, giving him strength. She could imagine how grim the situation had been back then and what bloody traces it left in her grandfather's heart.
"Later, I had no choice but to secretly send one of them away to Yun County, to a branch leader of our family there. That leader is also the grandfather of the deceased Yun Li," said the Old Marquis Yun as he glanced at Yun Li.
Yun Li put aside his earlier shock and looked at Yun Shan Yue, but didn't say anything.
Yun Shan Yue finally understood a question that had long puzzled her: why did her grandfather bring this branch of the family from Yun County to Cloud Manor. It was because he wanted to repay their kindness from back then and out of concern for their gradual decline in status, so he brought them to the capital.
"Yun County is far away from the capital, and it's a side branch of our family. Although there’s little interaction between us, we’re still blood relatives, making it less likely that others would suspect anything," continued the Old Marquis Yun. "Though I was reluctant to send away one of them, at least their lives were saved. When my son was born and your grandmother passed away, both events happened simultaneously, so it hid this from the Emperor's spies."
"And the child that remained is the heir to Cloud Manor—your own father," said the Old Marquis Yun, continuing his story: "Though he was born a moment after the other child, he was exceptionally intelligent and perceptive. The Cloud Manor needed an heir capable of carrying on its legacy, so I kept him."
Yun Shan Yue didn’t speak but listened intently.
"This child lived up to my expectations: he could read at three and practice martial arts by seven. Despite being born weak due to your grandmother’s insufficient blood, he was still mischievous and often sneaked out of the manor. I even couldn't find him!" Recalling those days, the Old Marquis Yun looked frustrated. "Every time I regretted not sending this child away like his brother."
Yun Shan Yue thought that her love for running around must be inherited from her father and couldn’t help but smile.
"You and your father share the same mischievous nature!" The Old Marquis Yun glared at Yun Shan Yue, who stuck out her tongue at him. He continued: "When he was ten years old, he left for three years without returning. I used every means to cover up his absence in the manor; I didn’t dare send people to look for him, fearing that the Emperor would find out. When I decided to bring back the child from Yun County after thinking he had died abroad, he returned unexpectedly. Not only did he return, but he also came back with martial arts skills which he wouldn't talk about. Wanting to discipline him, I found myself unable to match his strength, and neither could the manor’s covert guards."
The smile on Yun Shan Yue's lips deepened as she listened with interest.
"Later, I stopped asking. He became more obedient over time and didn’t run out much anymore. Whenever he did, it was for a short while before returning after several days or ten days at most." The Old Marquis Yun continued: "When the Emperor began to take an interest in the heirs of the Four Great Manors, setting up classes every month to test their abilities, my son didn’t stand out; he often ranked last and showed no signs of his martial arts training. He appeared weak and vulnerable—just like how you were back then—and became a laughingstock in the capital. Everyone said that Cloud Manor would decline because it had such an incapable heir." The Old Marquis Yun added: "Although I knew he was just putting on a facade, I didn’t reveal this to avoid drawing unnecessary attention to our family. My son is indeed clever."
Listening to the pride in his grandfather's voice regarding her father, Yun Shan Yue understood.
"This went on for several years until he came of age and it was time to discuss a marriage alliance. The Emperor wanted to arrange his marriage with Lady Lan, the eldest daughter from the Ministry of Justice. Although there had been no imperial decree yet, the Emperor had already consulted me. I met the girl; she seemed gentle and well-mannered, knowledgeable, and everything suggested that she could tame my son’s wild spirit. However, not wanting to make a hasty decision without consulting him first, since he was difficult to handle, I returned from the palace but couldn’t find him for two days. Knowing he had run away again, this time it was for three months."
The Old Marquis Yun said with some resentment: "The Emperor pressured me; unable to locate my son, I eventually agreed out of frustration. Then the imperial decree came down and betrothed them."
Yun Shan Yue sighed. "Then what happened Did he come back in a fit"
The Old Marquis Yun snorted: "Three months later, he returned looking disheveled as if crawling out of a refugee camp. He locked himself up for several days without waking until I finally got him to open his eyes. Seeing the imperial decree and furious, I threw it at him; after staring blankly for some time, although he didn’t show any happiness or protestation, he accepted quietly, which relieved me."
Yun Qianyue blinked her eyes, "What happened later" She thought it must not have succeeded. If it had, he wouldn't have married her mother.
"Later, the Emperor and I settled on a wedding date. The Lan Family sent their betrothal gifts to our house; he personally delivered them and exchanged birth dates with Lady Lan. Everything seemed normal, with no discrepancies in the etiquette between both families." When Old King Yun finished speaking, he changed topics, "The day of the wedding went smoothly! There were many guests present, and the Emperor even came to officiate the ceremony. However, I discovered that the woman was not a daughter from the Lan Family at all but an unknown woman."
Yun Qianyue's eyes suddenly lit up as she stared at Old King Yun, "That woman is my mother, right"
"Hmph!" Old King Yun responded curtly. "The girl was more beautiful than the Lan Family’s daughter. She was elegant and courteous; I hadn’t even asked for an explanation when people from the Lan Family came knocking to find out how their daughter had disappeared while she should have been in our house presenting tea as a bride. How could I possibly know So, I turned around to ask her. That girl claimed that she didn't know either. She was just passing through the capital city and saw a large household bustling with activity, so she went to watch. She didn’t realize she was put in the sedan chair by someone else and brought here." Yun Qianyue burst out laughing, thinking of how her father had switched places with her mother.
"I asked why she hadn't said that she wasn’t a member of the Lan Family; she replied that at that time, she was so hungry that it didn’t matter to her whether she was a Lady or not. She just wanted some food." Old King Yun seemed to recall this incident and smiled as well, "That girl looked very spirited with bright eyes. How could someone from an ordinary family act like this Furthermore, how could someone who had fainted due to hunger be taken into the sedan chair without any knowledge of it I then turned my attention towards that little rascal; sure enough, he was smiling as well and not denying anything. That’s when I knew there were problems."
Yun Qianyue laughed as she continued listening. Yun Li seemed to enjoy hearing this story too.
"Of course the Lan Family didn’t agree with this; they confronted your father about how he couldn't have missed that the woman wasn't a member of their family, but he said he had never met Lady Lan and couldn’t tell who was not. At that time in the Heavenly Kingdom, it was common for women to marry without having seen their husbands beforehand. When your father delivered his betrothal gifts at the Lan Family’s house, they avoided any contact with their daughter out of suspicion. Thus, the Lan Family gave away another woman's daughter while keeping their own at home; naturally, this made them look foolish and unable to speak up." Old King Yun continued, "Later on, the Emperor was informed and came to the Cloud王府."
"So that’s the previous Emperor then How did things go when he arrived" Yun Qianyue recalled how her mother seemed to have a connection with him.
Old King Yun continued, "When the Emperor arrived at the Cloud王府 and saw your mother, it was clear they knew each other. The Emperor became furious and wanted to arrest her for trial in the Heavenly Prison, but she fainted right then." Old King Yun added, "The Cloud王府 turned into chaos. The Emperor ordered doctors immediately; after their examination, they concluded that your mother had been overworked from preparing for the wedding and had become too tired, depleting her energy, which caused her to faint."
Yun Qianyue’s lips twitched; this meant that what was cooked was already eaten. It couldn’t be undone now!
"The Emperor's face turned pale; he wanted to punish your father and exterminate both the Cloud王府 and Lan Family! I naturally wouldn't agree with such a thing. This matter wasn't the Cloud王府’s fault, and I’m not afraid of the Emperor. The senior officials in court also witnessed everything, and when the sedan chair was brought into the house, the Emperor had seen it too. How could this be the Cloud王府's responsibility It must be the mistake made by the Lan Family!" Old King Yun raised his eyebrows with a fearless expression.
Yun Qianyue looked at Old King Yun and praised him in time, "Grandpa, you are truly great! What happened later"
"You stinky brat!" Old King Yun scolded Yun Qianyue before continuing: “Later on, the Emperor was so furious he wanted to detain your mother. Your father said that she had become his wife regardless of who she was and that they were already married; it’s just that fate didn’t favor them with a match between him and Lady Lan. He refused to allow the Emperor to imprison her, stating he would commit suicide if forced. Hearing this, your mother declared that if he died, she wouldn’t live alone."
"How romantic!" Yun Qianyue had no experience of those events but could imagine how deeply in love both must have been to go through such lengths. This was the kind of devotion and passion that made her father marry her mother.
“The Emperor became enraged and wanted to kill them both, but I wouldn’t allow it. Although he’s an ungrateful son, he’s still my child. Moreover, I know exactly what the Emperor's intentions were behind making the Cloud王府 and Lan Family families join together through marriage. At that time there was no choice, so we had to agree; now that your father married someone other than Lady Lan, it pleases me even more. Therefore, I argued against him resolutely. Once she entered the Cloud王府’s gate, she became a member of our family. If he wants to kill my only son, then let him wipe out the entire Cloud王府.” Old King Yun continued.
Yun Qianyue could imagine how furious the previous Emperor was at that time and asked, "What happened next"
"The Emperor stormed off in a rage! This matter concluded as such. Your mother became the Crown Prince’s consort of the Cloud王府. Meanwhile, the Lan Family’s daughter couldn’t marry again and soon after, the Emperor took her into his palace." Old King Yun sighed, "That was the former Lady Lan; the biological mother of the Seventh Prince."
Yun Qianyue couldn't help but sigh too, thinking that this meant the lady from the Lan Family who had almost married her father turned out to be Night Tianyi’s mother. Life was indeed more dramatic than stories and left Yun Qianyue speechless.
Do you think it's great how much love her parents have for each other This kind of wedding is powerful, right O(∩_∩)O Yay!
